If you’re a special educator, you probably know how important it is to define spaces in your classroom and build spaces where students are able to work. You also know there are times when you have students who need some “alone time” and others want to see what’s going on. I love using my rolling pocket chart to provide some privacy in the classroom, but I was seriously needing another room divider.
I checked online and my pocket couldn’t afford buying a room divider from a school supply store. So, this is when I needed to get creative. How can I make a room divider for my classroom that is easy to transport and easy on my pocket?
Here’s what I ended up doing. I headed to Amazon because, of course, I’m an Amazon kind of teacher. I thought about getting another pocket chart rack but those were out of my price range. It was time to get creative. I figured out that a garment rack
Now, if you’re patient, have time, and want to go to the store, I bet the dollar tree has shower curtain rings and you can probably find a cheap shower curtain at Marshall’s or TJ Maxx for left, but sometimes the convenience of ordering from home wins for me. It certainly did in this case!
When everything arrived, I built my garment rack, added the shower curtain rings, and hung my cute shower curtain. The shower curtain definitely needed some hemming and I kept saying “I’d get to it”, but my para decided she couldn’t wait for me and used binder clips around the bottom rings to hold the shower curtain in place. It honestly looks great and I don’t REALLY need to hem the bottom (let’s be real, I have about 4,658 other things on my to do list, so the binder clips will work for now).

So now whenever we need to block off a space or allow a student to have some privacy, we are able to roll this DIY room divider over and provide students with the space they need.
